Ambassadorial nominees unable to recite national anthem, pledge

The Senate on Tuesday began the screening of the 47 ambassadorial nominees sent to it by President Muhammadu Buhari for legislative approval.

Buhari had on June 9 sent to the Senate 47 names of Nigerians to be screened and confirmed as career diplomats.

The President, in the letter personally signed by him and dated June 6, 2016, requested the Senate to approve the list at the shortest possible time.

There was, however, drama during the exercise as some of the nominees, who were drilled by members of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs chaired by Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, could not recite the national anthem and the national pledge smoothly.

The nominees were asked questions ranging from diplomatic issues to the names of the senators representing their states, their geopolitical zones and the states in them, how many local government areas in their states, how many lawmakers in the Senate, among others.

While some of them stuttered while reciting either the anthem or the pledge, others missed their lines in the process.

Vivia Okeke (Anambra State), who was asked to recite the anthem, murmured when she got to the second to the last line of the first stanza, “One nation bound in freedom.” The panelists however came to her rescue.

Ibrahim Isah from Niger State, who is currently serving in Turkey, was asked to recite the national pledge. When he reached the third to the last line, he said, “To defend her unity and integrity,” instead of “to defend her unity and uphold her honour and integrity.”

Hakeem Balogun from Lagos State, who currently serves in the United States, recited the old national anthem to a point and was asked to start again and he got it right.

Jane Ndem from Benue State, who currently serves in Japan, got the number of lawmakers in the Senate (109); she also got the names of senators representing her state but when she was asked to name 12 states in Nigeria and their capital, she got 11 but named Lagos and Lagos as its capital instead of Ikeja.

Shakirat Ogundero from Oyo State was able to name two out of three presidential candidates in the 2015 election – Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.

Baba Garba, while reciting the pledge, skipped the “to serve Nigeria with all my strength” line, he returned to it and skipped “to defend her unity” again.

Janet Bisong from Delta State, while apologising for not being able to state the number of local government areas in her state, was interrupted by one of the panelists, Senator James Manager, who is from Delta, saying, “You know it; it’s 25.”

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, who led the nominees before the panel, after the exercise was postponed to Wednesday, however, said the reports of nominees not been able to recite the anthem and the pledge, which were already trending online, were not true.

But a senator in the panel, in a chat with journalists after the session, said Enang lied on the performance of the nominees.

“That was a lie. Everybody saw what happened. We were there; journalists were there; the cameras and the tapes were there. How can diplomats not know the anthem and the pledge of their country? If it were lawmakers now, he (Enang) would come for us,” he said.

APC govs meet Buhari, resolve to seek Ekweremadu’s removal

State governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress have resolved to do all within their powers to ensure that Senator Ike Ekweremadu is removed as the Deputy President of the Senate, The SOLOJAYBLOG has learnt.

Our correspondent learnt that this was the fallout of the two-hour meeting the governors had with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.

The Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, had initially told State House correspondents at the end of the meeting that the governors had decided to intervene in the crisis in the National Assembly, without giving details of their intervention.

But a source at the meeting told one of our correspondents that the consensus at the meeting was that it was an aberration for Ekweremadu, who is a Senator from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, to continue in office as Deputy President of the Senate.

The source stated, “The governors sympathised with the President (Buhari) for working with a National Assembly that is largely seen as unfriendly.

“Particularly, they observed that in the absence of the President of the Senate, the next person is his deputy. They therefore agreed that it was an anomalous situation for a PDP person to continue as the Deputy President of the Senate.

“They sought and got the President’s permission to intervene in the matter in their own way.

“They argued that the truth of the matter is that rarely is there any Senator that emerged without the backing of their governors, hence the governors have some levels of influence on the federal lawmakers.”

Okorocha had, on Monday, said Ekweremadu should get ready to vacate his seat as the Deputy Senate President.

Okorocha had added that a candidate of the APC, Benjamin Uwajumogu, who contested in the last Saturday’s rerun senatorial election in Imo State, would displace Ekweremadu as soon as he joined the Senate.

The governor had said, “The position of Senator Ike Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate President is at the moment under heavy threat because in no distant time, the APC senator-in-waiting from Imo State, Benjamin Uwajumogu, will take over the seat on the grounds that it is an aberration that a PDP senator from the South-East is deputy to an APC Senate President because, before now, APC could not produce a Senator from the South-East zone.”

Our correspondent further learnt that Buhari at the meeting approved the release of N2bn each to all APC states.

Another source, who attended the meeting, said the decision was based on what happened during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The source claimed that Jonathan had, before leaving office, released N2bn each to the PDP states at the time from the Ecological Fund.

He was alleged to have exempted APC states and PDP states, whose governors were at loggerheads with him, from the gesture.

“That issue was brought to the President’s attention and he has ordered the release of N2bn each to the APC states that did not benefit during Jonathan’s administration,” the source said.

To further cushion the effects of the downturn in economy on the states, Buhari was also said to have, during the meeting, approved that 50 per cent of money spent by states on federal roads be released to them.

Okorocha had, while briefing State House correspondents after the governors’ meeting with Buhari, said the state governors from the ruling party were concerned about the incessant happenings in the National Assembly and had resolved to look into the matter.

The two chambers of the National Assembly have continued to witness crisis since inception following the emergence of leaders, who were not the preferred candidates of the ruling party, the APC.

Crisis is currently brewing in the House of Representatives following an allegation by a former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, who accused the leadership of the House of padding the 2016 budget to the tune of N40bn.

Okorocha added, “We have come to reassure Mr. President that the APC governors are solidly behind him in his fight against corruption; his fight against insurgents and all his laudable projects.

“We are concerned about the incessant happenings in the National Assembly and we have taken it upon ourselves to look into the matter; that is the crisis in the National Assembly.

“We are going to look into the matter because we need a strong and vibrant National Assembly to make things move fast in the country.”

Okorocha defended the recent decision of the Nigeria Governors Forum for six state governors to travel to Germany for what they called “vocational training.”

“There is nothing like jamboree trip. We are going to Germany because we cannot do everything here without exchanging ideas. Everything you do in your home and your business, you share ideas.

“So, we want to see how they have done what they have done to succeed. It is the aspiration of Nigeria to be like other countries of the world,” he said.

When asked if the trip would be funded by states, some of who owed workers’ salaries, Okorocha responded, “So, who will fund it, you!?”

Despite the continued hardship in the states, the governor stated that a lot of improvement had been recorded in some states.

He noted that what the states were getting from the Federation Account was close to what they were collecting when crude oil was selling above $100 per barrel.

Other governors, who attended the meeting, included those of Kaduna, Kwara, Zamfara, Benue, Kano, Sokoto, Plateau, Niger, Ogun, Borno, Osun, Edo, Kogi, Adamawa, Nasarawa and Kebbi.

The meeting was also attended by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal; and the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, among others.

Ekeweremadu, however, declined to speak on the plans being hatched by the APC governors to remove him as the Deputy Senate President.

One of his aides, who was contacted by one of our correspondents on Tuesday night, said he had no comments until he was well informed on the matter.

Sydney holds mass for slain French priest

Sydney Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher has held a special Sydney mass for the priest slain in a terror attack in a church in France.

More than 100 people have attended a mass in Sydney's St Mary's cathedral to honour the life of a priest slaughtered during a terrorist attack at a church in France.

Father Jacques Hernel, 85, had his throat slit by two Islamic State supporters who took worshippers hostage in the Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray church, in Normandy, on Tuesday.

Archbishop Anthony Fisher told the early afternoon congregation at St Mary's that love should triumph over evil.

"We stand today with Father Jacques Hernel ... not for hateful ideology but for faith and love," he said.

"(The attackers) showed hatred for the church, priest and faithful even when they are demonstrably friends of Muslims."

Sydney worker Belinda Fitzgerald said she was not a regular church-goer but wanted to show her support.

"I don't usually come along, but wanted to show something, even small, for the French community," she told AAP.

The two knife-wielding attackers were shot dead by French police as they emerged from the church following attack in the riverside town in northern France.

One hostage was left seriously wounded.

Australia's Grand Mufti Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohammed denounced the murder, describing it as a betrayal of the Islamic faith.

"ISIS is an evil organisation that has hijacked the religion of Islam for its own brutal and nihilistic goals," he said in a statement.

Sheikh Shady Alsuleiman, president of the Australian National Imams Council, urged people not to allow the brutality of ISIS to create disunity.

RCCG announces measures for hitch-free convention

THE Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, has announced strict measures for a hitch-free 64th annual convention of the church, which is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 1, and run till Sunday,  August 7. 

The convention, with the theme  AMEN’ which literally means so shall it be, will be preceded by a four-day ministers’ conference which starts on Thursday. In his welcome address, the General Overseer of RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, said: “Amen as we all know is one of the names of our Lord Jesus Christ, you are, therefore, coming into this convention to encounter the AMEN.” 

A statement signed by Head, RCCG Media & Public Relations Department, Pastor Segun Adegbiji, said members, delegates and non-members were expected from about 190 countries  where RCCG had presence.

 According to him, the word  from Pastor Adeboye and other ministers would be robust, while music would be rich, as children, youth and adults would have roles to play. He then urged participants to take advantage of the numerous arrangements put in place to help them have a wonderful camp experience and a memorable time in the Lord’s presence. 

Adegbiji said RCCG buses in the church’s colours would be at the headquarters of all RCCG Provinces in Lagos and South West Regions of Nigeria from today to convey interested persons to the Redemption camp. 

He added  that Team Nehemiah had arranged LAG buses for shuttle services from the current Arena to the New 3×3 kilometer auditorium at Shimawa. On parking arrangements within the camp ground, Pastor Adegbiji explained that Car park G is strictly for Lagos worshippers while Odofin/Shimawa has been reserved for Ikorodu and members from Shagamu/Ibadan routes. Oloparun is for participants coming from Ogijo and exit to Lagos through Ikorodu; Shimawa  is for vehicles coming from Shimawa and Ikorodu, while commercial buses are to park at a section of Shimawa Car Park.

Abuja landlord removes tenants’ roof; N45,000 missing

A 50-year-old landlord, Solomon Kudu, allegedly removed the roof of his tenants’ apartment and stole one of the tenant’s N45,000, offences for which he was arraigned, yesterday, by the Police in a Lugbe Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja. 


Kudu, a resident of Suka village, Airport Road, Abuja, is facing a two-count charge of mischief and theft, preferred against him by police. 

The Prosecuting Counsel, Ukoha Ndidi, told the court that Benjamin Nyor and Abubakar Zainab, of the same address, reported the incident at Iddo Police Station on July 15.

 Ndidi said the defendant had intentionally climbed up and removed the rooftop of their apartment, while they were not at home. 

She further told the court that the defendant broke into Zainab’s apartment and stole her N45,000. 

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 287 and 95 of the Penal Code. However, Kudu pleaded not guilty to the charges. 

The presiding officer, Mr. Garba Ogbede, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each in like sum. Ogbede said that the sureties must not be less than grade level eight officers in the federal civil service and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court. He adjourned the case till August 31 for hearing.

Herdsmen invade Benue community, kill 14

MAKURDI—NO fewer than 14 persons were killed on Monday, in an attack on Gaambe-Tiev, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, by rampaging herdsmen, despite efforts by several parties to halt the unending invasion of Benue communities.

Vanguard learned that the invaders stormed the community at about 7:30a.m., shooting sporadically and razing buildings and farmland in the area. According to an eyewitness, the invaders successfully razed several homes, killed and injured most of the victims at Adeyohor village along Uwer-Gov Sevav Road. 

He said: “The herdsmen, in their usual fashion, stormed Gaambe-Tiev this morning (yesterday), around 7:30a.m. in their numbers, shooting sporadically and shouting. 

The people never expected it. “Everybody, including women and children, ran for their lives. Unfortunately, several persons lost their lives and many more were injured. 

Bodies of some of those killed are being recovered from the farms and we are still counting.” Reacting, member of the state House of Assembly representing Logo constituency, Dr. Kester Kyenge, who confirmed the latest attack, said the number of the dead could be far more than the 14 being circulated.

 He said: “By tomorrow (today), we will have a clearer picture of the number of the dead. I plead with the government to act fast to stop these attacks and killings.” Contacted, Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent Moses Yamu, said he was yet to be briefed on the matter.

Diana’s death: Prince Harry regrets not talking sooner

London – Britain’s Prince Harry has spoken about how he regrets not talking sooner about the impact of the death of his mother, Princess Diana. 


Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, when Harry was 12 and his brother Prince William was 15. Harry, now 31 and fifth in line to the throne, said he had not discussed his mother’s death until three years ago.

 “I really regret not talking about it, for the first 28 years of my life, I never talked about it.” He added: “It is oK to suffer, but as long as you talk about it, it is not a weakness.

 Weakness is having a problem and not recognising it and not solving that problem.” Harry, who is the queen’s grandson, was speaking last week at a barbecue he hosted for the mental health charity Heads Together, attended by sports starts such as former England footballer Rio Ferdinand and Olympic athlete Kelly Holmes.

 “I think the key message here is that everyone can suffer from mental health issues. “Whether you’re a member of the royal family, whether you’re a soldier, whether you’re a sports star,” said Harry, a former army officer who served in Afghanistan.

Nigeria finishes IAAF World U-20 Championships with no medal

Team Nigeria to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World U-20 Championships which ended on Sunday did not win any medal. 


The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oluwatobiloba Amusan, a 110m Hurdles finalist, who was the only hope of securing a medal, finished the race in fifth position. She secured the position with a time of 12.95 secs.

 Elvira Herman of Belarus returned a time of 12.85 secs to clinch the first position, while Rushelle Burton of Jamaica came second with a time of 12.87 secs. 

The U.S. Tia Jones returned a time of 12.89 secs to win the third position and her compatriot, Alexis Duncan, came fourth with a time of 12.93 secs.
